XLN Audio XO – Visual Drum Library Browser and Beat Builder for Composers

€29.99

XLN Audio XO plots your drum samples on a visual map organised by sound, so the right kick or hat is a click away instead of a folder hunt. A built-in sequencer, sample shaping and effects turn that library into finished, human-feeling beats inside your DAW.

Description

Every composer owns more drum samples than they can remember, scattered across drives bought over years of projects. XLN Audio XO attacks that problem rather than adding yet another folder of one-shots. Its central idea is a visual browser that analyses the samples you already own, along with its factory content, and arranges them by how they actually sound. Similar kicks gather together, hats sit near other hats, and moving around the map becomes a way of thinking about tone instead of file names. For media composers who may need a dry underscore pulse in the morning and a heavy trailer beat after lunch, that change of perspective saves real time and often surfaces sounds that would otherwise stay buried.

A Library You Can See, Not Search

The browser, called XO Space, groups sounds by sonic similarity, so swapping one snare for a neighbour is an audition, not a search. Once a kit takes shape, the built-in sequencer handles pattern building directly in the plugin, with control over velocity, swing and humanisation to keep programmed parts from feeling mechanical. Individual samples can be shaped with pitch, filter and envelope controls, then treated with built-in effects including EQ, distortion, reverb and delay, which makes quick layering and stacking practical without opening extra plugins. Your own samples can be imported and absorbed into the same visual system, so personal recordings, production libraries and factory material finally live in one place, sorted by frequency, character and texture rather than by whichever folder they arrived in.

Building Rhythm for a Cue

XO suits the way rhythmic cues are actually assembled under deadline pressure. Sketch the pattern in the sequencer, drag MIDI or audio into the session when the arrangement firms up, and export loops, stems or one-shots depending on what the mix needs. In picture work, drums rarely need to be loud to be felt. A restrained kick pattern under a dialogue scene, a brushed texture beneath a flashback, or a single low hit before a reveal can change how an audience reads the image. Build the part in layers: establish the pulse first, then add colour, then remove anything that competes with the voice or the principal melodic line. Keep velocities varied so repeated bars do not feel pasted together, and print a dry version alongside any processed version so the dubbing mixer can rebalance quickly when the cue is revised. When a scene changes gear, automate energy rather than simply adding more hits; a pattern that breathes with the edit will almost always score better than a loop left running at full intensity from first frame to last.

Try the part in three passes: pulse only, pulse with fills, and the full arrangement. The right version is usually the second one. Save the fullest take for the moment the scene earns it.

Formats, Hosts and Requirements

XO runs as a VST, AU and AAX plugin on macOS 10.10 or later and 64-bit Windows 7 or later. The source listing names Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, Cubase, Pro Tools and Reaper among its supported hosts. Minimum requirements are given as 4GB of RAM and an Intel Core i5 or equivalent, with 8GB or more and an SSD recommended for faster sample loading. Those are modest demands by current scoring-rig standards, which means XO can sit comfortably on a laptop used for writing away from the main studio as well as on a primary workstation.

Who Reaches for XO

Reach for XO if your problem is choice rather than shortage: too many samples, too little time, and grooves that need to feel played rather than pasted. Beatmakers will enjoy the speed, but the same qualities serve composers building percussion beds for hip-hop, electronic, pop and film work, where the right found sound, swapped in seconds, can define an entire cue’s character.

Context is the real test for any production tool, so judge it inside a finished cue rather than in isolation.
