Description

Most spring reverbs announce themselves immediately. The AudioScape XL-305R Dual is interesting because it can choose not to. Developed in collaboration with Kiive Audio, it recreates AudioScape’s equally tempered stereo spring reverb, a design inspired by the rare XL-305R hardware and the earlier XL-305 and MicMix concept. Its defining idea is a 12-spring assembly in which the springs are tuned together, producing a smoother, more diffuse and more musical decay than a conventional spring configuration. For composers, that means vintage character is available without forcing every cue into a surf or dub pastiche.

Twelve Springs Tuned Together

AudioScape compares the behaviour of the tuned springs to opening a piano lid, holding the dampers open and singing into the strings. The analogy is useful for scoring composers, because it describes sympathetic resonance rather than a simple echo of the source. The modern hardware version was reimagined over several years with input from original XL-305 designer Wayne Kirkwood, before the concept was brought into software with Kiive Audio. That lineage matters, since the plugin is modelling a specific and unusual mechanical idea, not a generic spring algorithm with a vintage interface.

Drive is central to the sound. At gentler input settings the reverb delivers a smoother ambience that AudioScape describes as moving toward a plate-like character. Push the input harder and the recognisable spring behaviour and texture come forward. Overload indicators help you monitor how strongly the virtual system is being driven, so the transition between those two characters can be deliberate and repeatable across cues in the same score.

Dual Channels, EQ and Stereo Control

The Dual version provides stereo processing based on the dual-channel architecture of the hardware-inspired design, and each side can be shaped independently. Input controls determine how strongly each channel drives the reverb, while wet and dry mix controls are available per channel, so the effect can be a subtle spatial layer, a heavily processed statement, or part of a more experimental stereo setup. Each channel also carries a four-band boost and cut EQ for shaping the wet signal, making the reverb darker, brighter, thinner, warmer or more focused without EQing the dry source itself.

Two further controls help with placement. Mono Drive links the stereo channels so the image is easier to control as a unified source, while Mono Return sums the reverb return to mono for narrower placement. Stereo output monitoring is included, as is a vintage-inspired interface option. Artist presets from Armon Jay, Matt Lange, Joe Carrell, Melissa Bell, Clifton Miles and Adam Sliger provide starting points that show the range from restrained ambience to obvious spring colour.

Using It in Scoring and Mixing

The stated sources are vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, drums, percussion, synths, keys and full instrument buses. In a score, try the gentle, plate-like end of its range behind a solo guitar or a fragile vocal, where a conventional hall would sound too large for an intimate scene. Reserve the harder-driven spring character for source music, period settings or a deliberate retro cue, where the mechanical colour becomes part of the storytelling. Because the EQ lives on the reverb itself, you can keep low strings out of the tail while still giving a melody a long, bright decay.

Formats and Facts

XL-305R Dual supports VST3, AU and AAX on macOS, with native Apple Silicon support listed, and VST3 and AAX in 64-bit Windows. Those formats cover compatible versions of FL Studio through VST3, Logic Pro through AU, and Pro Tools through AAX. Its key features are the equally tempered 12-spring concept, independent dual-channel processing, input drive with overload LEDs, per-channel mix and four-band EQ, Mono Drive, Mono Return and artist presets. It is a character reverb with unusual restraint, which is exactly why it suits picture work.
