XLN Audio DB-30 Drum Butter – Six-Module Drum Colour and Punch Processor

Original price was: €129.00.Current price is: €49.99.

XLN Audio DB-30 Drum Butter puts six colour-coded drum processors — Boom Shack, Shift, Space, Compress, Saturate and More — behind giant macro knobs, with deep panels underneath when a cue needs precision. It is a complete drum-bus channel for punchy, characterful percussion in seconds.

Description

Drums carry the pulse of a score, whether that means a trailer-sized percussion stack, a tight hybrid kit under an action cue, or a simple loop holding a scene together. Getting them to feel finished usually involves a chain of separate plugins for weight, tone, space and glue. XLN Audio DB-30 Drum Butter collapses that chain into one window. Six colour-coded modules, each driven by a large cream macro knob, cover the classic stages of drum processing, and each macro opens into a deeper control panel when the broad move is not quite specific enough.

Six Modules, One Coherent Chain

Boom Shack looks after the low end, with Boom and Shack modes alongside pitch and decay controls for shaping how a kick or floor tom blooms and settles. Shift moves frequency and formant content, with invert and stretch options for turning an ordinary hit into something with a distinct identity. Space handles dimension, offering booth-style ambience with pre-delay, ducking and pan/width controls, so short scoring-stage room can be suggested without washing the transient away.

Compress is the centre of gravity for many users, with Punch, Warm, Glue, Gentle, Smack and OTT flavours covering everything from a gentle bus hug to an obviously aggressive parallel-style squeeze. Saturate adds harmonic colour in Console, Tape, Tube, Digital and 4-Track flavours, useful when sampled percussion sounds too clean against a live recording. Finally, More is the deliberate wild card, with x1, x2 and x4 intensity stages for cues where restraint is not the brief.

Macros for Speed, Panels for the Detail

The two-layer design is what makes Drum Butter practical under deadline pressure. If a snare needs to feel fatter during a playback, you grab the Compress macro and turn — the result arrives in seconds and the session keeps moving. Later, at mixdown, the same module opens up: balance Punch against Warm, set the Down/Up relationship, focus the band, and refine what the macro sketched.

A global MAGNITUDE slider scales the intensity of the entire chain, which is an elegant way to audition how far a drum bus wants to be pushed without disturbing the internal balance you have built. The preset system, including the signature “Better With Butter” preset, provides starting points that already sound finished rather than academic, and user feedback reflected in a 4.8 out of 5 rating from more than 80 ratings suggests that immediacy lands with working producers.

The Bottom Strip: A Drum Channel in Itself

Below the modules sits a finishing strip covering the jobs every drum bus eventually needs: Input gain, EQ, a Cut filter, Tone, Air, Attack, Sustain, Clip and Output. In scoring terms, this is where a percussion stem gets prepared for the mix — transient shaped, air added where the top end must sparkle against strings, low clutter cut before the stem is sent onward. Handling these stages inside one plugin keeps the chain recallable and the session tidy.

Use in a Score and Formats

Picture a hybrid action cue: a loop provides the grid, live toms provide the weight, and a programmed kit provides the attack. Running the programmed elements through Drum Butter lets them borrow the cohesion of a single processed kit, while Space and Saturate help them share a world with the recorded material. For quieter work — a brushed kit under dialogue, a hand-percussion bed in a drama — low MAGNITUDE settings and the Gentle compression flavour keep the processing supportive rather than obvious.

DB-30 Drum Butter runs as VST3, AU and AAX, covering the major DAW environments composers and mixers work in. XLN Audio built its reputation on Addictive Drums, and the same philosophy runs through this processor: professional results without menu-diving. Every purchase includes an individual licence key, with download links and licence delivered by email after checkout. At €49.99, 61% below the regular €129 price, it is a small investment for a drum bus you will reach for on cue after cue.
