ROLI Equator2 — Six-Source Hybrid Synth Built for Per-Note MPE Expression

Original price was: €219.00.Current price is: €49.99.

Equator2 combines six source modules — oscillator, sampler, granular and noise — with a deep modulation system, a 12-slot effects rack and full MPE control. Strike, glide, slide, press and lift shape every note individually, not the whole chord at once.

Description

A synthesizer patch usually sits still while you play it. The equator2 mpe synth from ROLI is designed to do the opposite: it is built around performance gesture, so movements such as strike, glide, slide, press and lift become part of the sound itself. For composers who perform cues rather than programming them note by note, that changes the relationship with the instrument — a chord stops behaving like a static block and starts behaving like an ensemble, each note responding independently.

Six Sources, Four Kinds of Synthesis

Equator2 provides six Source Modules, and each one can operate as an oscillator, a sampler, a granular engine or a noise engine. The oscillator mode includes wavetable and virtual-analog capabilities, while the granular engine can transform samples into detailed microscopic textures. Sources are routed through a flexible signal architecture, so conventional synthesis, sampled material, granular processing and noise can be combined inside a single instrument rather than treated as separate workflows.

That architecture covers a wide territory: expressive leads, deep basses, evolving pads, cinematic textures, atmospheric soundscapes, experimental sequences, organic electronic sounds, granular textures, hybrid instruments and complex evolving patches. A sound can begin with an oscillator, incorporate a sample, pass through granular processing, move through filters and then be transformed by modulation and effects — which is precisely how a hybrid scoring patch gets built, except here it happens inside one plugin.

MPE: Expression Per Note

ROLI’s MPE implementation allows expression to be applied per note rather than treating an entire performance as one global MIDI gesture, with individual notes responding independently to pitch movement, pressure and other gestures. Equator2’s MPE inputs are Strike (note-on velocity), Glide (polyphonic pitchbend), Slide (polyphonic Y-axis control), Press (polyphonic pressure) and Lift (note-off velocity).

In a scoring context that means a string-like pad can swell one note while another bends into its neighbour, or a lead line can lean into pressure the way a bowed or blown instrument does. The release becomes expressive too, because Lift captures how a note is let go — a detail most synthesizers discard entirely.

Modulation and a 12-Slot Effects Rack

The modulation system is built for movement: five envelopes, five LFOs, two Multi-Mod sources, four Keytracking sources, four Math Modifiers, Random sources and expression-based modulation. The Multi-Mod system combines LFO-like behaviour with multi-stage envelope behaviour and allows custom curves to be created, which makes it possible to design patches that continuously change rather than triggering the identical sound at every key press.

Effects are equally integrated. Equator2 includes a semi-modular effects rack with 12 slots and multiple routing configurations; ROLI’s documentation lists 15 effects covering dynamics, EQ, distortion, filtering, chorus, flanger, phaser, delays and reverbs. Routing structures include mixed, parallel and feedback configurations, so the effects section functions as another stage of the sound-design architecture instead of a finishing polish.

There is also a practical template argument for an instrument like this. A single Equator2 patch can carry a cue’s entire textural layer — source, movement and effects in one place — which keeps sessions tidier than a chain of separate instruments and processors all contributing one part of the sound. When a director asks for that layer to feel more organic, more distant or more restless, you are editing one coherent design rather than rebalancing five plugins against each other. That coherence is a large part of why expressive instruments reward the time spent learning them.

Where Equator2 Fits in a Composer’s Rig

Equator2 is positioned for electronic music, ambient work, cinematic sound design, experimental production and contemporary pop. Its particular strength in a scoring setup is textural: granular sources, deep modulation and per-note expression combine into pads and atmospheres that evolve under a scene without needing constant automation. Rather than recreating one vintage instrument, ROLI has built an expressive sound-design environment — a synthesizer designed to be played, and one that rewards the kind of gestural performance a composer brings from acoustic instruments.
