NOIRE captures a custom-intonated Yamaha CFX 9-foot concert grand in Saal 3 at Funkhaus Berlin, in two instruments, NOIRE Pure and NOIRE Felt, with 100 snapshots and the generative Particles Engine.
Some piano libraries aim for neutrality. NOIRE aims for a place. Native Instruments built it around a handpicked, custom-intonated Yamaha CFX 9-foot concert grand associated with composer and pianist Nils Frahm, recorded in Saal 3 at Funkhaus Berlin with vintage microphones and preamps. Native Instruments and Galaxy Instruments captured the instrument over several weeks, and that room and signal chain are part of the sound rather than decoration applied afterwards. For composers writing modern classical, ambient and cinematic piano, that sense of a specific instrument in a specific space is precisely what makes a part feel recorded instead of rendered.
Pure and Felt: Two Instruments, One Piano
NOIRE contains two separate Kontakt instruments drawn from the same grand. NOIRE Pure presents the piano without felt preparation, delivering a clear and detailed tone while retaining the depth, sustain and expressive dynamic range of the sampled instrument. It is the version for detailed solo performances, melodic writing and cues where the piano has to speak plainly. NOIRE Felt places a felt moderator between the hammers and strings, producing a gentler tone with reduced attack. That softer onset suits intimate, atmospheric and delicate composition, the kind of underscore that sits close to dialogue and needs to feel like a hand on a shoulder rather than a statement.
Having both in one library changes how you write. The same motif can be stated in Pure for a main title and recalled in Felt for a quieter scene, preserving the identity of the instrument while shifting its emotional temperature. That kind of motivic recall is a basic scoring technique, and NOIRE supports it without loading a second library.
Customisation and the Particles Engine
NOIRE offers extensive control over the piano’s character, including attack, release, resonance, overtones, velocity response, temperament, piano noises, EQ, compression, reverb and delay. Piano noises deserve attention for scoring work, because mechanical detail is often what convinces a listener that a performance happened in a room. Adjusting velocity response and temperament also lets the instrument fit an existing template or an older recording more convincingly.
The Particles Engine is the library’s most distinctive creative tool. It generates clouds of pulsating and harmonic elements based on the notes you play, adding motion to a performance and transforming simple piano parts into evolving textures. For ambient music, film scoring, sound design and experimental composition, that means a sparse two-note figure can sustain a long scene without looping obviously. Used subtly, the particles feel like resonance in the room. Used openly, they become a second, generative layer that follows your harmony. The library includes 100 snapshots as starting points for different piano characters and creative directions, and it is designed to integrate with KOMPLETE KONTROL keyboards.
Size, Format and Applications
NOIRE is a 16 GB KOMPLETE Instrument and works with the free KONTAKT PLAYER or KONTAKT, with the current Native Instruments page listing KONTAKT PLAYER or KONTAKT 7.6 or later. Its stated applications include cinematic scoring, ambient music, modern classical, pop, electronic production, pop ballads, singer-songwriter work, lo-fi and atmospheric production, and experimental sound design. Few piano libraries cover that range from a single sampled instrument. If your scoring work leans on piano as both harmony and texture, NOIRE gives you a concert grand, an intimate felt preparation and a generative engine in one coherent instrument.
Choosing between the two instruments quickly becomes a compositional decision rather than a technical one. Pure suits writing that needs clarity, definition and a full concert dynamic range, where the piano is the lead voice in the cue. Felt suits the opposite dramatic situation, where the music must stay close, private and slightly fragile, and where a harder attack would push the scene too far forward. Many composers will use both across a single production, returning to the same sampled grand as the story changes. The 100 snapshots make that exploration fast, giving immediate access to different characters before you commit to detailed adjustments of your own.
