Quantastical STRÄNG 2 — Resonant Body Synthesizer for Living, Organic Tones

Original price was: €59.99.Current price is: €39.99.

STRÄNG 2 puts a real-time convolution body inside each synthesizer voice, so resonance becomes part of the note itself rather than an effect added later. With SYMPATHY, STRING, SPARKLE, dual layers and 341 factory presets, it is built for pads, drones and textures that feel physically alive.

Description

Most subtractive synthesizers generate a tone and then decorate it. The strang 2 synthesizer reverses that relationship: a tonal convolution body sits inside every voice, in real time, so the resonant character is inseparable from the note you play. For composers used to coaxing life out of static synth lines under picture, that distinction matters. Repeated notes can shift subtly in character, sustained chords acquire a sense of physical space, and simple oscillator material starts to behave less like a waveform and more like a resonating object in a room.

A Body Inside Every Voice

The convolution body is the centre of the instrument. Instead of running an oscillator through filters and then applying resonance as a finishing effect, STRÄNG 2 lets the oscillator interact with the body while the voice is sounding. Quantastical Sound describes the result as a subtractive classic made alive, and the design supports that claim in practice: the body is not a triggered sample layered underneath, it is part of the sound-generating process itself. That makes the instrument particularly rewarding for slow harmony, where you can hear resonance accumulate and decay around each pitch.

Version 2.5 widens the idea considerably. SYMPATHY adds sympathetic resonance, allowing held notes to resonate through the body of notes played afterwards, much as undamped piano strings answer one another when the sustain pedal is down. Dedicated BLEND, DECAY and TONE controls govern the section, so you can keep the effect as a faint halo around ambient pads or push it until chord progressions bloom into one another. For underscore work, where transitions between cues often need to feel continuous rather than edited, that behaviour is genuinely useful.

STRING, SPARKLE, SHADOW and SUB

Four companion layers give the main oscillator its colour. STRING is a physically modelled exciter that can drive the convolution body, using Karplus-Strong-style synthesis or modal excitation to suggest a plucked string or a struck, resonating object. Gentle settings add attack definition; stronger settings turn a patch into something openly acoustic in character. SPARKLE, introduced in version 2.4, is built from shifting partials that can move between sine-like purity and band-limited saw-like harmonic structures, with SHAPE, RANGE, COLOR, INHARM, TUNE and SMEAR controls. Routed through the body, those partials become another excitation source, capable of glassy, bell-like tones or bowed, reedy textures.

SHADOW and SUB complete the voice. SUB supplies low-frequency foundation beneath the resonant material, while SHADOW contributes an additional layer of character alongside the main oscillator. DUAL mode then runs two full layers simultaneously, blended with an A/B control and fine-tuned against each other. That is the route to wide pads, detuned leads, thick plucks, layered basses and cinematic drones that keep moving long after the initial attack has passed.

Writing and Designing With STRÄNG 2

Movement is where this instrument earns its place in a scoring template. Version 2.5 adds an A/B toggle providing four freely assignable envelopes with 12 destinations, including FOLD and TWIST, so a sound can keep developing after the note begins. Thirteen fixed sample-and-hold patterns can be locked to the bar or distributed across a chord, introducing controlled, repeating variation into filters and timbre instead of relying only on conventional LFO shapes. Skins introduced in 2.5, including Walnut and Pink, can be cycled inside the plugin with the B key, changing background, knobs, frames and lighting.

The CORRIDOR reverb engine adds a final spatial dimension. Described by the developer as a network of coupled rooms rather than a single conventional space, it can keep sounds relatively intimate or open them into large cinematic environments. Version 2.3 also brought full MPE support, including per-note pressure routing to volume or the modulation matrix, which suits composers who perform parts in rather than drawing everything into a piano roll. Preset packs can be exported with a name, author information and cover artwork, making it easy to organise your own cue-specific libraries.

Facts and Formats

The factory library in version 2.5 contains 341 presets, with the newest sounds placed in a dedicated NEW category in the browser. STRÄNG 2 runs on macOS and Windows in AU, VST3 and AAX formats, plus a standalone version for sound experimentation away from a session. A 14-day trial is advertised by the developer. If your scores need synthesizer tones that breathe, resonate and refuse to sit perfectly still, STRÄNG 2 offers a distinctive alternative to another conventional subtractive instrument.
